Traditions
Stepping: In 1987 the sisters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. first introduced stepping to ladies of Lambda Theta Nu sorority Inc. by inviting them to step on stage in a unity step. Our sisters at California State University, Chico added the use of machetes as a symbol of strength, a symbol with direct cultural ties.
Machetes: In 1989 Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc. became the first sorority to incorporate the use of machetes in a stepping performance. The use of machetes has traditionally showcased the bravery of men. However, for Lambdas, breaking down this male-based tradition not only served as symbol of empowerment but also exemplified the determination of Latinas to integrate into every aspect of life that was not traditionally meant for Latinas. The incorporation of machetes in our performances personify our culture and our strength as women whose perseverance is multidimensional.
Strolling: Strolling, also known as party walking, is a synchronized dance used to encourage commonalities among sisters and showcase our organization and/or to compete in shows.
